About Danna Blesser ...
"The only way one can become a human being is through relationships to other human beings." Joseph Campbell
Joseph Campbell was a masterful specialist in world myths and rituals. He voiced complex ideas in earthy and deceptively simple phrases. Here he is describing how human myths and rituals create and enhance the ever-diversifying human experience.
Therapy is one of the few rituals we still have to facilitate and celebrate rites of passage. The relationship between therapist and client is unique, due to the mindfulness we bring to this singular relationship. Through this relationship we explore and reflect upon other significant relationships in our lives. By means of these relationships, we enrich our humanity, often by both suffering and growing.
My therapeutic work is influenced by approaches that focus upon the relationship and the power of relationships to heal. These are analytic approaches with roots in depth psychology. However, I also believe that my clients' require a full range of tools and responses, so I remain flexible and attentive to the nature of the problem and the intentions of my clients who are seeking assistance and support.
Whether you're struggling with a relationship, a career, a medical issue, creative issues, or a spiritual issue, if it isn't significantly impacting your life and causing you undue stress, you wouldn't be seeking help. It takes courage and strength to build a relationship with another human being in order to seek help.
I am especially interested in working with people who are looking for assistance in recovering from trauma, whether the trauma was a single incident, or a lifetime of incidents. Trauma freezes and paralyzes us. It interrupts the flow of moving forward, into the unknown future, with all of our available resources. Trauma can be conceived of as imagination that's frozen in time.
Therapy, at its best, thaws out the imagination and releases it into activity, creativity, and play. A vivid imagination portends hope for the future. Opening the imagination is delicate and powerful work, which is accomplished with care, compassion, mindfulness, and patience. There may be moments when the cure feels worse than the wound. There should also be moments of clarity and moments of deep solace and comfort.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (License Number MFT 44297) with the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences. I've been providing individual therapy for adults, children, and adolescents, for eight years, in various clinical settings. I've worked in outpatient and residential settings for severely emotionally disturbed adolescents and at-risk youth and their families. I've provided therapy for couples in distress and facilitated therapeutic groups. I also work well with teenagers and their parents. I'm interested in helping to open up blocked creativity and to assist those who have been unable to move forward on their projects. I am also available to do Dreamwork and Sandplay, should the opportunity arise.
