About Carol Bennett …
One of my favorite sayings is, ‘Self Care is Primary’. This is not the promotion of self indulgence or selfishness, but rather a pursuit of knowing more clearly who we are and how to best take care of ourselves in all our relationships. All too often our behaviors, expectations, entrenched negative beliefs about ourselves or intense emotions (or emotional numbing) prevent us from having the loving, more satisfying relationships we desire. We get stuck and start to see the situation, or ourselves, as hopeless. Here’s where therapy can help.
Therapy doesn’t ‘fix’ people, but rather helps them recognize what’s not working and make sense of their difficulties. Possibilities for change emerge. They start to feel empowered.
This is not as easy as it sounds. Most often emotions (and we know they can be messy) need to be managed. Painful, deeply rooted negative beliefs (I’m not loveable, there’s something wrong with me) need to be unlearned. This makes us vulnerable, perhaps frighteningly so.
I use my presence and an eclectic approach to understand, support, and guide my clients through this process. I have found EMDR to be a powerful psychological tool in resolving many symptoms and issues.
I received my master’s degree in psychology from Phillips Graduate Institute and I am a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (License Number MFC 46448) with the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences. I am also a member of CAMFT (California Association of Marriage and Family Therapy) and have been trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
