Description
Over the last decade, the landscape of technology has changed at an accelerated rate.  Technological developments have shifted human attention, communication patterns and interpersonal dynamics.  We are just beginning to understand the impact that technology has on our attachment relationships.
Attachment theory is a well-established framework for understanding different styles of human connection and how these styles impact our daily lives.  Originating from the observations of John Bowlby in the 1930’s and evolving through the discoveries of neuroscience, attachment theory is a useful tool for therapists.  This framework can help make sense of complex human dynamics and can help guide people toward relationships that foster resilience and regulation.
This workshop will provide an overview of the preliminary research on attachment theory in the digital world we now inhabit.  Specifically, this workshop will look at the interplay of attachment styles and technology use (including social media, dating apps and smart phones).  The aim of this workshop is to help therapists feel better equipped to recognize and support clients when technology and attachment needs are causing clinical distress.
