Description

This course will explore the power of attachment theory to unlock our deeper understanding of human development, social bonds and our innate need for connection. Participants will follow the development of attachment theory, from John Bowlby’s and Harry Harlow’s first observations of the mammalian attachment system to Mary Ainsworth’s and Mary Main’s development of attachment style classifications to the most recent neuroscientific discoveries of how attachment impacts our brains, minds and nervous systems.
This course is suited for clinicians who are unfamiliar with attachment theory or who want to refresh their knowledge. It can be taken as a stand-alone course and will also be part of an upcoming three-part series focusing on the application of attachment theory to diagnostic case-formulation and treatment planning.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will describe mechanisms by which early attachment experiences are carried forward into predictable patterns across the lifespan.
  2. Participants will be able to identify the salient characteristics of four different attachment styles.
