Edgar McGregor has always been fascinated by the power of weather and the beauty of nature. Growing up in Southern California, he found himself drawn to meteorology, even in a region not known for extreme storms—until recently. After the surprise windstorm of January 22, 2022, slammed Altadena with 65 MPH gusts, Edgar realized his community needed better, hyperlocal weather forecasting. He launched Altadena Weather and Climate, a Facebook group to help neighbors connect with each other and their environment. In February 2024, he started a Patreon to provide even more detailed forecasts and support his growing work. Less than a year later, his forecasts helped thousands prepare for the devastating January 2025 Southern California Firestorms. Driven by curiosity, compassion, and an unshakable work ethic, Edgar weaves together science, communication, and data to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Bio:

Edgar McGregor is a meteorologist and environmentalist living in Pasadena, California. He writes hyperlocal weather forecasts to his community members to help them prepare for whatever weather may be on their doorstep. He aided the Altadena community in preparing them days in advance of the historic 2025 Southern California Firestorms. He has also conducted over 2,000 daily trash pickups at his local hiking trails, all of which have now burned in the Eaton Fire.

Can you tell us about your background and what led you into this profession?

I have always been deeply interested in meteorology, extreme storms, and the environment. Living in Southern California has not (until recently) exposed me to much extreme weather, but the manner in which meteorology impacts our lives and the ecosystems around us is a never ending joy. In our rapidly evolving media landscape, I saw that there was a need for improved hyperlocal weather forecasting following the January 22, 2022 windstorm that brought 65 MPH winds crashing through Altadena rather unexpectedly. I founded Altadena Weather and Climate, a Facebook group to help locals connect with each other and weather. In February 2024, I started my Patreon service to monetize my weather forecasting to support myself and bring even better hyperlocal information. Within a year of this service being created, the cataclysmic January 2025 Southern California Firestorms struck the community I forecast for. Armed with my forecasts, thousands of my neighbors were better prepared for the ensuing disaster.

What drives you professionally and personally?

The development of multiple skill sets, including writing, speaking, communicating, photography, data-keeping, and persistent hard work.

What are your 5 core values?

 1. Do your best to leave a positive impact on the world, for what else is there?

3. Always maintain multiple passion projects at once, and ensure there is a diversity in partners, professions, skill sets, physical locations, and audiences
4. Look for ways in which bad habits can be simply altered to improve yourself as a person, such as replacing video games with having collections
5.  Do not disrespect daily walks in nature.

What motivates you?

The crushing knowledge I have 90 years in this Universe to make as big and positive an impact as possible.
