Who is Joan Hasibar, the therapist?

Joan is a 2014 graduate of Azusa Pacific University (APU) with a Masters in Clinical Psychology and a Concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy, upon which she received the University’s Award for Dedication to Learning. Joan began building her private practice while completing her traineeship with La Vie Counseling Center under the Supervision of Joanne Weidman, LMFT and Margaret Lauren, LMFT. After leaving La Vie Counseling Center, she continued building her practice under the Supervision of Kimberly Zakarian, LMFT. In 2016, Joan began working under the Supervision of Natasha Morisawa, LMFT while practicing fulltime with Hillsides Mental Health under the Supervision of Jennifer Henry, DSW, Iris LopezFlegeance, LMFT, Elizabeth Munoz, LMFT, Judy Heredia, LMFT, Jane Nelsen, LCSW, Melanie Horstmann, LCSW, Holly Homeyer, LCSW; resulting in a wealth of experience with various populations and case presentations. It is during this time that Joan developed the cornerstones of her practice that she continues to nurture and prosper each day.

Joan is a trauma survivor and suffered from PTSD since her mid-adolescent years. She only discovered this after taking herself to therapy for marital issues and receiving a proper diagnosis in her mid-thirties. After experiencing positive outcomes in her own therapy, she desired to become a therapist. She has volunteered for numerous organizations before her studies with APU: in California, Diversified Intervention Group, Heal Within, L.A. Works; in Florida, Ronald McDonald House, Sunrise Retirement Home, St. Petersburg Home for Abused Boys; in Alaska, W.I.S.H. (Women in Safe Homes)

Joan specializes in treatment focused on trauma/PTSD, grief and loss, anxiety and depression, and attachment and attunement. Joan has treated clients from various backgrounds, including first responders, healthcare workers, and veterans. This includes therapists! She has witnessed the sacrifices her clients make, personally and professionally, resulting in an ongoing cycle of rupture and repair. Joan’s clinical focus is to assist her clients process, rebuild, balance, and strengthen themselves through psychoeducation, mindfulness, meditations, tapping, and proprioceptive writing. Joan’s theoretical framework is a combination of psychodynamic, attachment, and cognitive behavioral.

Joan is a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP). This allows her to assess her clients with a holistic approach and provide education to her clients about the benefits of treating mental health and neurological issues with nutrition and supplements alongside traditional psychotherapy. Joan is not a physician, nutritionist or dietician. She educates her clients on how nutritious foods, herbs, supplements, and lifestyle affect their mental health and refers to the appropriate clinician, respectively (i.e. – PCP, nutritionist, endocrinologist, etc.).

Joan believes in striking a balance with all of her clients allowing them to achieve a more fulfilling life so they can continue to do what they love, personally and professionally. Her focus is to explore and enhance her client’s lives with customized interventions that increase knowledge and awareness and nurture and integrate self-care and mindfulness practices, sometimes taking only minutes a day. Joan believes in focusing on investing in oneself first to create and strengthen their ability and desire to invest in others.

Joan enjoys spending time with loved ones, dancing, yoga, entertaining in her home (i.e. – cooking and baking for others), photography, the arts, music, outdoor activities (i.e. – hiking, walking, kayaking, fishing, gardening), and exploring and learning new things.
